THE HISTORY...

Experience a unique, Haunted Tour of this 40-room Italianate-style villa built in the 1830’s on Burlington Heights; the former site of a fortified War of 1812 military encampment established by the British in 1813, just before the Battle of Stoney Creek.

Once home to Sir Allan Napier MacNab, railway magnate, lawyer and Premier of the United Canadas (1854-1856) and his family, today Dundurn Castle tells the story of the family who lived above stairs and the servants who lived and worked below stairs to support their affluent lifestyle.

Her Royal Highness Camilla (wife of Prince Charles), The Duchess of Cornwall is the museum’s Patron and the great, great, great granddaughter of Sir Allan MacNab.

Dundurn Castle is infamosly haunted, yet not often talked about. This particular event is almost 20 years in the making due to this fact. With enough ghostly experiences that have been backed-up with some historical elements, we can safely say that this unique castle is definitely haunted by several spirits that still call it home to this very day.

"Sir Allan MacNab and his family may still remain in ghostly form within the Castle. Just outside the room where MacNab's second wife Mary wasted away from consumption it is said there is always a cold chill and a mysterious breeze that blows out the candles.

There remain mysterious drafts, objects moving around and the occasional sound of mysterious music and singing."

SOPHIA MACNAB was Sir Allan MacNab's most favoured daughter, but was sent off and married at the young age of 23 to an English Earl named William Keppel. It was during this time that she missed the passing of her beloved father.
