Haunted Hamilton since 1999, for a very special Haunted Hamilton 20th Anniversay Kick-Off Event INSIDE historic Auchmar! Spooky Steph is very excited to be joined by her Special Guest, Master of Ceremonies, TV Producer/Star, Mitch Markowitz (Hilarious House of Frightenstein).

Spooky Steph sits down with her favourite "Super Hippy", Mitch Markowitz, as he puts her on the hot seat! Exploring and discussing ALL things Haunted Hamilton, Spooky Steph will dare to answer everything and anything about what it's been like running this unique historical business for the past 20 years, as well as all the trials and tribulations it's had it's fair share of. From spending the night at the Lizzie Borden House, to standing on the grounds of Amityville, her historical adventures will thrill you. From trying to save "Bellevue Mansion" to opening Canada's VERY first 'Museum of the Paranormal' in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Steph has some intriguing stories to share!

"Spooky Steph"

As local historian, researcher and tour guide for the past 20 years, Stephanie “Spooky Steph” Dumbreck has hosted many popular and exciting sold out events in Hamilton and surrounding area, as well as Bus Trips to historical locations all throughout Canada and the United States.

From MacNab’s Dundurn Castle to the industrial hallways of the Cannon Knitting Mills, Stephanie has spent the past two decades partnering with many amazing people, museums, historical venues & facilities, heritage societies, educational & school groups, local businesses, City councillors, press & the media, ALL with one common goal – to promote, preserve, and educate not only current Hamiltonians and tourists alike, but to also call attention to the dire need for our next generation to partake in a keen interest in our local history.

Stephanie has spent 20 years immersing herself in the constant and ever-changing world, where paper and pen meet technology. Haunted Hamilton was started in the early days of the internet, where word-of-mouth and credibility meant (and still) mean everything. And here she is, 20 years later and turning 40 this June, completely and thoroughly ready and willing to take on what's next!

Mitch Markowitz
"Hilarious House of Frightenstein"

Mitch Markowitz is the co-producer of the iconic Hilarious House of Frightenstein as well co-staring as the Super Hippy character with Vincent Price and Billy Van. The Markowitz Corporation originally produced 130 hour long episodes of The Hilarious House of Frightenstein specifically for CHCH TV in Hamilton, Ontario. They thought the series would run for one year and then fade away, disappearing into television heaven. On the contrary, the series was syndicated numerous times over the years across Canada, the U.S. and abroad, airing as far as Spain, Norway and Australia. The company never anticipated that the series would attain ‘cult’ status. Having been on the air since 1971, The Hilarious House of Frightenstein is the longest running kids’ TV show in Canadian history.

More recently, Mitch co-starred with Academy Award winner Vanessa Redgrave in Rue Morgue Cinema’s supernatural/horror feature film, The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to critical acclaim going on to be screened at more than 30 film festivals worldwide, garnering numerous awards.

"Buchanan of Auchmar"

"Isaac Buchanan first saw Canada in 1830 as a pensive 19-year-old, dispatched to the new world by a stern older brother bent upon restoring the fortunes of a proud Scottish family. From clerk in Montreal, Isaac rose to lead his own firms in Toronto and Hamilton where, by the late 1840s, he had become a dominant player in the Canadian wholesale trade. But making money was never Isaac's sole concern.

Setting in Hamilton, he pursued a diverse career as businessman, writer and politician. He also created Clairmont Park, a country estate featuring a picturesque manor house called Auchmar. The story of this unusual man is an absorbing tale of raucous parliaments, rebellion and assassination; of Canada's first major railroad, a stunning achievement accompanied by horrific disasters and shocking corruption; of professional, personal and civic bankruptcy; of American invasions; and of the birth of a nation.

Jennifer Douglas
Young Family Artifacts

Jennifer Douglas, Great-Granddaughter of Alan and Edna Young, will share some stories about her grandmother Gwyneth Young (who lived at Auchmar from 1926-1945) and how Auchmar serves as a window into her grandmother’s life!

In 1926, Elsie Buchanan sold her family estate Auchmar, to A.V. Young, a wealthy and successful businessman whose family history and interests are part of the fabric of the city. Its’ descendants continue to impact the City of Hamilton significantly almost a century later. Jenn will also be displaying some actual Young family artifacts at this event for guests to view!
